Here is how the lottery works:
You must complete and submit your application form to Citizens of the World Silver Lake by February 13, 2017 at 5:00pm in order for your child to be included in the lottery. Interest forms received after the deadline on February 13 will be held for a subsequent lottery (if necessary). This form does not guarantee your child’s enrollment in this school. Please note that timely submission of all paperwork, including proof of address, will be required if your child is selected for enrollment.
If the number of students who wish to attend CWC SL exceeds the number of seats available, students are admitted by random public drawing (also known as a lottery) in accordance with Education Code §47605(d)(2).
Per our CWC SL charter, the following preferences shall be given in the lottery:
- Students residing within the boundaries of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
- Siblings of students currently enrolled at CWC SL. Siblings are defined as any two students who share a legal parent / guardian.
- Children of the Founding Parents of CWC Silver Lake (not to exceed 10% of total enrollment).
- Students who qualify for free or reduced price lunch (for more information, visit http://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/nu/rs/scales1415.asp).
- Students currently enrolled at Grant Elementary School or Dr. Sammy Lee Medical and Health Science Magnet.
- Students / families currently residing in the attendance area of Grant Elementary School or Dr. Sammy Lee Medical and Health Science Magnet.
Please note that if you are extended an offer for enrollment through one of the preference above, you will need to provide supporting documentation in the enrollment packet to accept the enrollment offer. A verification of this will be done prior to finalizing your child’s enrollment. If your child was offered enrollment via a preference and CWC SL deems that the child does not qualify, your child will be placed on the waiting list.
Within two weeks of the lottery, families will be contacted via email or letter in the mail with lottery results, including waitlist number (if applicable). Those families will have 2 weeks to respond and accept or turn down the space offered. Any spaces that become available will be offered to the next family on the waiting list until the class is full. Be advised that the time to respond and accept or turn down a space offered ranges from 2 weeks for the first round of accepted applicants (immediately after the lottery) and reduces to 72 hours for subsequent rounds and then 24 hours when the start of school approaches (after August 1st).
Other Important Information
What is the minimum age for admittance to kindergarten in California?
In accordance with California Education code, a child needs to be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2015, for entry into Kindergarten. CWC SL provides transitional kindergarten to children turning 5 years old between September 2nd and December 2nd only. Transitional kindergarten is a two-year program and at CWCSL it is seamlessly integrated in to our regular kindergarten classes. Our developmental and highly differentiated model ensures children are continually progressing.
Can I apply to other Citizens of the World schools?
Citizens of the World Silver Lake (CWC SL) coordinates its enrollment efforts for its own school site. To apply to other Citizens of the World Charter school locations, families will be required to complete a separate application at each school.
